In Mexico, sustainable tourism is particularly relevant due to the constant flow of international visitors. Mexico’s Secretariat of Tourism (Sectur) estimates that the country will receive 28.4 million international tourists this year, generating $14.262 billion in tourism revenue.
Madariaga highlighted that the Mexican Caribbean was the first region in the world to make a legal commitment to promote sustainable tourism. He also mentioned Mayakoba, in the Riviera Maya, as a successful example due to the recognition it has received from Rainforest Alliance.
Finally, he maintained that tourism that takes economic, social, and environmental impacts into account will be the model that ensures lasting development for the industry and host communities.
