Daniel Madariaga highlights innovation as key to food security

Daniel Madariaga Barrilado stated that innovation in food systems represents a fundamental factor in addressing the challenges of global food security, especially in light of rising food prices, population growth, and the effects of climate change.

According to data from the World Bank, more than 50% of low-income countries are experiencing food price inflation above 5%.

The proportion reaches 88.6% in lower-middle-income countries and 61% in upper-middle-income countries. Even 67.3% of high-income countries are facing elevated rates.

Daniel Madariaga’s proposals include the MABO and MAZO Models.

Against this backdrop, Madariaga maintains that ensuring food security requires much more than simply bringing food to the table. The specialist emphasizes the need to ensure nutritious and affordable products, while also promoting models that take into account the social, economic, and environmental impacts of production.

This perspective aligned with the ideas presented during the latest edition of the WIRED Summit, in the panel “Technofood: How can we make the food of the future sustainable?” Participants analyzed the challenges facing food production amid population growth and environmental pressures.

Among Madariaga’s proposals are the Organic Biocapacity Food Models (MABO) and the Environmental Measures for the Organic Zone (MAZO). Both models seek to promote sustainable agricultural practices and reduce the environmental impact of productive activities.

The specialist also highlighted the potential of technofood, which incorporates tools such as genetic engineering, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and nanotechnology.

These technologies can improve crops, optimize supply chains, and develop alternatives such as meat produced without animal farming.

For Madariaga, transforming the way food is produced, distributed, and consumed will make it possible to build more efficient and sustainable systems capable of responding to the food needs of the future.
