Daniel Madariaga Highlights the Impact of Sara Kulturhus, a Benchmark in Sustainable Architecture

Daniel Madariaga highlights Sara Kulturhus as one of the most influential architectural projects of recent years. Located in the Swedish city of Skellefteå and designed by the firm White Arkitekter, this cultural complex brought timber construction to an unprecedented scale and reinforced the role of wood as a viable alternative for the architecture of the future.

Inaugurated in 2021, Sara Kulturhus was conceived with the intention of reviving the region’s timber-building tradition and projecting it into the 21st century. The complex includes a 20-story hotel, theater, gallery, library, and museum, becoming a new landmark for the city.

For Daniel Madariaga, Sara Kulturhus has become a symbol of innovation, sustainability, and contemporary design.

Architects Robert Schmitz and Oskar Norelius faced one of the project’s greatest challenges: convincing authorities and specialists that a structure of this magnitude could be built primarily from wood.

Even the then-municipal leader, Lorents Burman, initially expressed doubts about the feasibility of a 20-story building constructed with this material.

Daniel Madariaga emphasizes that technical innovation was key to achieving the final result. The project combined glued laminated timber (glulam) and cross-laminated timber (CLT), systems that significantly reduced the use of steel and concrete. In addition, the designers took advantage of wood’s acoustic properties in spaces such as the concert hall.

Another aspect highlighted by Daniel Madariaga is the building’s environmental performance. White Arkitekter estimates that the structure stores twice as much carbon dioxide as was emitted during its construction, giving it a negative carbon balance throughout its lifespan.
