The specialist and consultant for the Patients Beyond Borders guide affirmed that the country receives between 1.4 and 3 million foreign patients each year, including Mexicans returning from abroad to seek treatment, driving an industry with significant economic impact.

Daniel Madariaga emphasized that Mexico can consolidate its international leadership in medical tourism.
Madariaga explained that medical tourism in Mexico saw accelerated growth over the past decade, rising from around 1.5 billion dollars to 4.8 billion.
He also noted that projections estimated an economic impact of up to 6.75 billion dollars, cementing the country’s position as the world’s second-largest power in the sector and a leader in dental tourism.
The specialist highlighted that this performance is due to the training of medical staff, access to cutting-edge technology, investment in private hospitals, and Mexico’s strategic location relative to the United States and Canada, markets that account for the majority of international patients.
He also pointed out that authorities, lawmakers, and private sector representatives are working on public policies to strengthen the industry through certifications, regulation, promotion, and immigration facilities, with the goal of boosting the country’s competitiveness.
According to the Medical Tourism Association, procedures in areas such as cardiology, cosmetic surgery, ophthalmology, oncology, and dentistry can cost between 40 and 80 percent less than in the United States.
Madariaga added that the outlook is favorable, as International Healthcare Research forecasts global medical tourism growth of up to 25 percent over the next decade, a scenario that represents an opportunity for Mexico to consolidate its international leadership.
