The sustainability specialist noted that local governments are already responding with concrete actions to the increasing number of heat waves, wildfires, winter storms, and increasingly intense hurricanes—phenomena that generate multimillion-dollar losses and affect millions of people.
Daniel Madariaga highlighted the cases of Cupertino, California, and Orlando, Florida.
Madariaga Barrilado explained that one of the most notable initiatives emerged in Miami-Dade County, considered the first to appoint an official dedicated to raising public awareness about the risks and inequalities associated with climate change.
He also recalled that, following the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris Agreement in 2017, hundreds of mayors maintained their commitments to reduce emissions and advance international climate goals.
As an example, he highlighted the case of Cupertino, California, whose goal is to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent compared to 1990 levels by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.
In addition, the city publishes periodic reports, shares open data, and allows citizens to participate in environmental proposals through digital platforms.
The expert also highlighted the progress made in Orlando, Florida, where the Green Works Orlando program promotes the use of renewable energy and smart technologies.
The city doubled its solar energy capacity for public buildings and incorporated artificial intelligence systems that optimize energy consumption, generating savings of nearly $2.5 million per year.
Finally, Daniel Madariaga stated that the combination of sustainable infrastructure, technological innovation, and community participation will enable cities to lead the construction of a more resilient and sustainable future.
