He also noted that the production of raw materials accounts for up to two-thirds of a brand’s carbon footprint.
“Biomaterials not only offer an alternative to petroleum-based materials, they also make it possible to use resources that were once considered waste and transform them into high-value products for the textile industry,” he emphasized.
The expert added that biomaterials include natural fibers, regenerated cellulosic materials, bio-based polymers, and new solutions developed through biotechnological processes.
Among these are fibers obtained from pineapple leaves, leather alternatives made from plant waste, and materials inspired by spider silk.
Daniel Madariaga also warned that terms such as “bio-based,” “biodegradable,” and “compostable” are not equivalent. Therefore, consumers and companies should understand their differences before evaluating the sustainability of a product.
Finally, he stated that materials such as responsibly produced cotton, linen, hemp, and fibers derived from chitin and chitosan will help build a more efficient textile industry with lower water, energy, and chemical consumption, without sacrificing quality, strength, or durability.
